Judy Elkins worked in numerous aspects of Visual Effects for 23 years and has 4 Emmy Nominations for her work on Star Trek Deep Space Nine.
Her film career started at ILM as a Rotoscope artist on Raiders of the Lost Ark, a VFX Animator on Poltergeist and Star Trek II the Wrath of Khan, and Creature Sculptor for Return of the Jedi.
Her film journey began with animation classes at the Rice University Media Center in Houston, where she became fascinated with the Oxberry Animation Stand and photographic techniques. This training led to many years working as a Motion-control Camera Operator and also an Art Director for Multi-Pass Motion Graphics. She expanded her Motion Control work to photographing miniature models and sets for The Abyss, Total Recall and Hunt for Red October.
Judy’s Art and Film experience led to a VFX Coordinator position on Star Trek Deep Space Nine, where she worked with Supervisor Gary Hutzel. Her understanding of art techniques as well as camera and optical processes allowed her to provide strong back-up for Hutzel and to supervise 6 episodes on her own. She contributed many art elements to the show, including the Cardassian Transporter, The Bajoran Orb, and the planet surface for Bajor.
Judy is retired now but has many great memories and stories of her time in Hollywood. She enjoys hearing the interests of the new generation of VFX Artists and encourages young people to follow their hearts and interests.
