Dr. Anthony Ramirez

Anthony R. Ramirez is an Assistant Professor of Communication and Assistant Director of the Center for Latino Studies at the University of Houston-Downtown. A native of El Paso, Texas, he earned his Ph.D. in Communication from Texas A&M University under the mentorship of Dr. Srividya Ramasubramanian and Dr. Antonio La Pastina. He also holds a B.F.A. in Drawing and an M.A. in Communication from the University of Texas at El Paso.

Anthony’s research explores Latinx representation in media and popular culture, with a focus on immigration, the U.S.-Mexico border, and Latinx/e storytelling through digital humanities and multimodal approaches. He is passionate about public scholarship, mentoring, content creation, and community-building.

An award-winning educator, Anthony has been recognized by Texas A&M’s Association of Former Students for Excellence in Teaching (2022) and by the Latina/Latino Communication Studies Division and La Raza Caucus of the National Communication Association for Excellence in Teaching and Mentorship (2023).

Outside of academia, Anthony enjoys making art, reading comics, playing video games, and spending time with loved ones. Additionally, he is a fan of Batman, Blue Beetle, alternative rock, the New York Giants, and most imporatntly, green chicken enchiladas.
