While raising a family, Julie taught art in private schools, community classes, and at the Monart School of Art in Temecula, California. Julie has also been a designer and creator in the Japanese American craft industry for over 30 years with her own line of T-shirts, rubber stamps, and whimsical illustrations. Her chibi-style work has been sold in museum gift shops, boutiques, and retail stores throughout the United States.

Julie Sakai is the recipient of the Eisner award for Chibi Usagi: Attack of the Heebie Chibis which she co-created with her husband, Stan Sakai. She is known for her cute chibi style and has her own line of licensed designs called Chibi Time. Most recently, her work has been featured in the UTme! program by Japanese fashion brand UNIQLO in Ala Moana, Hawaii.
